Many of New England’s towns owe their names to their English counterparts, but how do these New World towns relate to their namesakes? While Wells, England, is well-known for its ancient beautiful cathedral, Wells, Maine is known for its pristine estuaries such as the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge.

The Granite State

Well known for its rugged White Mountains (that actually spill over into Maine) and it’s large expanses of wildness, New Hampshire is often referred to as the Granite State for its plethora of granite quarries.

Known for its rocky winding coastline, its Southern sandy beaches, and the magnificent Arcadia National Park, Maine has long been a place unique among all states. The most forested state in the country, this special place is a beloved vacation-land for many.

Although our smallest state, Rhode Island has a lot to recommend it, from beautiful seaside vistas to elegant Gilded Age Mansions. And true to its name the ocean is very much a part of the state’s identity.

New England Pride

Awash in rainbow colors, New England has a proud heritage in gay rights. Vermont was the first state to introduce civil unions in 2000.. And in 2003, Massachusetts became the first state to recognize same-sex marriage. Many other New England states soon followed and today the region is among the most LGBTQ-friendly areas in the nation.

Ayer to Boston

My painting juxtaposes the rural country main streets of my hometown of Ayer, Massachusetts, with the metropolitan public commons of Boston, as well as showing the history of both locations as they relate to one another.
